April 2015 A to Z Blogging Challenge- Chapter 10- Jump the gun

I'll Be There Beside You

Chapter 10

Today’s Idiom – Jump the gun

Meaning- If you jump the gun, you start doing something before the appropriate time.

At home, the preparations were already on. Shilpa and my mom were busy preparing a list of all the items that they would have to shop for the wedding. I really didn’t understand why most women had this intense fascination with shopping. As I heard them discussing gold rate and that they’d have to soon buy gold for the wedding, I was exasperated.

“I’m not even engaged and you guys are talking about wedding so soon. Don’t you think that you are jumping the gun?

Shilpa and my mother just laughed heartily. They explained that a wedding meant elaborate planning and the earlier they started working on the list, the easier it would be on the D-day.

I sighed and went up to my room to pack. I had to leave for Bangalore tonight as I had come down for the weekend. I was amused at how quickly my life had changed. When I arrived on Saturday morning, I was a carefree, footloose bachelor but now I was a soon-to-be engaged and slightly-in-love man.

I had taken Lalitha’s cell number and now I typed a message to her- “I’ll be leaving tonight for B’lore. Do call me when u reach next week

I was jubilant when I heard that Lalitha and her mother were visiting Bangalore next weekend for an Ayurvedic treatment that Asha aunty was undergoing. I was thinking of planning something special for Lalitha when I received a reply- “I’ll miss you. Have a safe journey.

Her words brought a smile to my lips. I hoped that the next 5 days to weekend would move fast and I could be with Lalitha again.

Downstairs I could hear my mother speaking loudly on the phone and I thought that she was probably informing all our family members about the good news. Had I known, that my mother was trying to unsuccessfully convince my relatives that Lalitha was indeed a perfect match for me and no matter what they said she wouldn’t change her mind, I’d have been alerted to the fact that my mother was hiding a vital information from me.

But I was already building my future with Lalitha. Slowly but surely I was falling in love. Many times I flashback to that moment when I was blissfully unaware of the calamity that was about to strike my life. I often think, had I know that many years back Lalitha was found guilty of murdering a man, would I have still gone ahead and married her?
